Threats to Themselves—and the Nation

Now, many of them feel it’s necessary to hunt down the workers assigned to help them.

Every day, new stories come to light about MAGA disciples threatening the well-being and often the lives of their perceived opponents. Among the latest such incidents are threats against meteorologists; against Jenna Griswold, Colorado’s Secretary of State; against Springfield, Ohio, businessman Jamie MacGregor; and, last but not least, the militia hunting parties targeting FEMA workers in North Carolina.

Weather Woes

Many of us laughed at the ludicrous allegations spewed by the inane Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene that “they”—apparently “the deep state”—control the weather and are targeting red states with the devastating hurricanes of recent weeks. Even most of Greene’s MAGA congressional colleagues shrugged off her crazy rantings. But all it took was a few other Republican lawmakers to chime in and the MAGAverse was convinced. The result has been numerous death threats against weather forecasters—as if they have any control over the weather they report on.

A Trumpist “Traitor” in Ohio

In Springfield, Ohio, home to persistent false claims about Haitian immigrants eating residents’ pets and the parks’ geese—claims that have been repeatedly debunked yet still spouted by MAGA folks, including their Messiah—a conservative businessman is now the recipient of numerous death threats for daring to declare that his Haitian employees are honest, dedicated workers.

Jamie McGregor, a fifth-generation Springfield resident and the owner of McGregor Metal, has been labeled a “traitor” for defending his Haitian employees.  “Why are you importing Third World savages who eat animals and giving them jobs over United States citizens?” one voicemail asked. MacGregor, who voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020, is now persona non grata for daring to defy the party line that brands non-white immigrants as “vermin” that are “poisoning the blood of our country.”

Crisis in Colorado

In Colorado, the security detail for Secretary of State Jenna Griswold was boosted—while she was in the hospital giving birth—because 45-year-old MAGA backer Teak Brockbank had made credible threats against her life. Like so many other MAGA nuts, Brockbank was angry at Griswold over her efforts to keep Donald Trump off the Colorado ballot because of his leading role in the January 6 insurrection.

Brockbank wrote, "People like the secretary of state of Colorado [and] the secretary [of] state of Arizona have to be put to death.” The man has, of course, been arrested and is in custody. But millions more share his views and, likely, at least thousands more are willing to go to the violent extremes Brockbank planned.

Numbskulls in North Carolina

Meanwhile, according to reports, “Federal emergency response workers operating in North Carolina's Rutherford County in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene were told to evacuate on Saturday over concerns that an ‘armed militia’ was threatening workers in the area.”

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is in North Carolina and other states ravaged by two recent major hurricanes to help residents recover from the devastation. But their efforts have been hampered by MAGA backers who take the spurious rantings of their megalomaniacal messiah as gospel.

When Donald Trump and his minions began spreading lies about the current administration and the federal relief agencies it oversees, many—perhaps most—of the messiah’s dedicated disciples accepted those lies unquestioningly. Never mind that they are the victims of these lies. Never mind that believing their messiah’s lies is ruining their lives. They crowned him. To turn away now would be to admit that they’d been duped, conned.

So, not only do they reject the $750 of immediate relief offered, but they also reject FEMA’s efforts to fully assess the damages to their property so that the federal government can help them rebuild. But that’s still not enough to prove their absolute dedication to their messiah. No, in addition to rejecting the government’s offers of help, now many of them feel it’s necessary to hunt down the workers assigned to help them.

That means that if some of their neighbors are willing to accept federal aid, they won’t be able to get it because the aid workers have been run off by good ol’ boys seeking to prove their absolute allegiance to their messiah.

Around the country, poorly educated MAGA minions—the ones Trump said he loves—seek to prove their dedication to Trump and the MAGA movement through intimidation and violence. Imagine what life will be like for all Americans—but particularly for those seen as “enemies”—if this madman and his unwavering MAGA disciples regain the power of the presidency.
